Chapter 1 -Placing Natural Limitations on Divine Power—Lord have mercy : I shall begin my discourse by taking a look at the events surrounding the conception and birth of the main protagonist of this book, the Lord Jesus Christ my Lord, the Great Physician of all times. Though, strictly speaking, it precludes His Healing Ministry, the circumstances surrounding His birth help to emphasise the point that the Power of Almighty God knows no bounds. There may be many reading this book who are struggling hard to conceive their own children. Try as you may, your efforts have remained futile. Medical science may well have given up on you. It is my prayer that you will draw inspiration from this chapter, and, yes, that you will, like Hannah, the mother of Samuel, pray unceasingly to Almighty God to let His will be manifested in your life. For nothing indeed is impossible for the Lord of Hosts. Years before the birth of Doctor Jesus, Isaiah the prophet, under Divine inspiration, declared: Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14 A good seven hundred years elapsed after that proclamation without anything happening. Many had given up hope of that prophecy ever being fulfilled. Not so the Lord I serve, to whom as Apostle Peter put it in 2 Peter 3:8 “one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day”. Yes, just at the time when everyone had given up on the prophecy, something extraordinary happened.
An innocent virgin, by the name of Mary, betrothed to a certain gentleman by the name of Joseph, received a Divine Visitation. In the visitation she was told she would conceive a child in a manner that had never happened before. Instead of the usual way of conception known to Humankind whereby a sperm of a male joins the egg of the female to produce an offspring, Mary was told she would conceive without any carnal knowledge of a male person. And so it happened. Many in our day find it difficult to believe in the Virgin Birth. Among such individuals, no doubt, are the atheists who do not believe in God—yes, those who hold that we just arrived on planet Earth without a Creator. I do not wish to turn my presentation of the work of the Great Physician into a platform to debate the Creation versus Evolution controversy, but I can hardly leave the matter without a comment. The atheist and proponents of Evolution expect us to believe the world came into existence without a Creator. Put another way, those who do not believe in Almighty God hold the view that the universe is the product of Chance—an evolutionary accident. Now, if the gurus of atheism and evolution want us to believe in the accidental emergence of life on earth, why are they all of a sudden crying foul in the matter of the Virgin birth? If mere chance can bring all that is seen and unseen into being, why in the same vein cannot the same chance cause a virgin to conceive? You realise, dear reader, how one-sided are the points of view of our dear fellows of the human race that are drawn into the Atheism–Darwinism–Evolutionists’ bandwagon.
They seem to be so focussed on the validity of their adventurous theories they just will not consider other points of view. So while the learned academics of the club of atheists and evolutionists hold on to the theory of accidental emergence of life on earth, they at the same time call deluded anyone who believes in the Virgin Birth of the Lord Jesus Christ. Accidental evolution of life on earth, yes; virgin birth of Doctor Jesus by the Virgin Mary, no! Wherein indeed lies the problem of the virgin birth, ladies and gentlemen? “It is not possible, not feasible, not practicable, unheard of!” I hear someone shout from the other side of the road. “What do you mean, friend, by ‘It is not possible, not feasible, not practicable, unheard of ”?” “I am not so stupid, friend, to believe in that fairy tale! I am a scholar, a well-known one for that matter. The concept of the virgin birth contradicts scientific knowledge; yes, it is in opposition to established scientific knowledge. You are indeed deluded in believing such a fallacy!” “Now wait a moment, friend. When you speak of ‘not possible, not practicable, not scientifically feasible’, just who are you referring to? Do you have in mind mortal beings like you and me, ordinary representatives of the Human Race—mere mortals of flesh and blood? You and I who today are and tomorrow will vanish from the surface of the earth? You and I of the race homo sapiens, limited in our capacity to see beyond the now, indeed, the very moment in time of our existence? You and I who, even as we are engaged in this strong exchange, are completely unaware of what might befall us the very next moment?! Will the hearts fixed in our chests by the Creator God to pump blood to keep us alive suddenly decide, without any prior notice, to go on strike? “I have no quarrel with you if you hold that from the point of view of ordinary human beings of flesh and blood, it is impossible for a virgin to conceive. That is fine friend, that is fine.
However, I get the impression that you are projecting the limitations that are characteristic of you and me, representatives of homo sapiens, into the realm of the Omnipotent and Omnipresent One, Almighty God of Heaven and Earth. “Indeed, I get the impression that because our brains are made of ordinary matter and cannot imagine how a virgin can conceive a child without the carnal knowledge of the opposite sex, you make the erroneous conclusion that it should also be impossible for Almighty God, Yehowah Jireh, the ‘I am that I am’, to bring such an event to pass!” I want to dwell on the issue of the virgin birth for a while, for it is fundamental to the appreciation of the Powers of God Almighty. There are, no doubt, some who, whilst not denying the existence of the Almighty God, cannot fathom how He could cause a virgin to conceive without the carnal knowledge of a male person. I do not want to be judgemental, friends. Still, I want to express my personal view on the matter. I have the impression that those harbouring such reservations are perhaps influenced by a belief in a different god, the likes of Tegare, Akonodi, Kwaku Fri, Voodoo, and suchlike—and not by a belief in the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In the economy of the Creator of Heaven and Earth, words such as impossible, impracticable, not feasible, do not exist. Oh, may the good Lord of Heaven and Earth open the eyes of all who deny His existence and grant them a glimpse into spiritual realities. Indeed, it is the opening of the eyes of the spiritually blind that we need in our day.
What then is the issue at stake concerning the Virgin Birth? After God had created Adam, he decided to create a helpmeet for him. So He created Eve, a female. He then instituted the concept of marriage. As I stated in my book Seeing God through the human body: A Doctor’s reflection on the human miracle (Anomalos Publishing, 2009), Almighty God could have resorted to asexual reproduction whereby at regular intervals we would replicate into several individuals as a means of propagating Mankind. He could also have equipped each individual with the capability to carry out sexual reproduction without involving another individual in the process. As I admitted in my book, I cannot figure out how that would have functioned—as asexual beings—but He to whom everything is possible would have found a way of bringing it to pass. In the end, Almighty God decided to settle on the male–female solution as we know it today. Through the union of the egg of the female and the sperm of the male, new individuals are created. That is what you and I, ordinary human beings, have over the years become familiar with; that is what our human brain with all the limitations placed on it by Almighty God, is capable of comprehending. Basically, those who have a problem with the virgin birth are in effect saying that Almighty God of Heaven and Earth, the I Am That I Am, the God of Abraham, Moses, Isaac, Jacob, the God of Israel, is incapable of causing a sperm to appear from nowhere to fertilise an egg produced by Mary to form an individual. Dear friends of the race of the homo sapiens—ordinary mortals, we who are momentarily here today and tomorrow gone with the wind—how dare we attempt to place limitations on the unlimited Power and authority of God Almighty? Yes, how dare you and I do such a thing—in effect, impose boundaries upon the unlimited powers of God Zebaoth! May He have mercy on us! I just do not understand why anyone should have an issue with the matter of the virgin birth. For what is more difficult to achieve—to cause the oceans to come into existence or cause a sperm to fertilise the egg released by a virgin?
The problem is that we seem not to ‘get it’ when it comes to matters relating to Almighty God—indeed, the dimensions involved when it comes to the supremacy and might of Almighty God. Before I leave the topic, I want to paint a scenario to help us get a faint idea of the power and authority of the ‘I am that I am’. Let us imagine that the whole of Mankind, divided as we are today into nations, tribes, national, political, economic, social, religious blocks, should for a moment join our military capabilities together in a conflict against the Army of Almighty God! Yes, let the whole of Mankind gather together all the military arsenals at its disposal—the immense military might of NATO, spearheaded by the USA, plus that of Russia, China, Israel, India, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, Ghana, Nigeria, etc. Yes, let us gather together an Army Universum, equipped with weapons boasting the latest technology of the 21st century—satellite-guided intercontinental ballistic missiles, bunkerbreaking missiles, panzer-breaking assault missiles (you can go on listing them until the cows come home) and pitch ourselves in a battle against the Army of the Holy One. Yes, imagine that—the totality of Army Mankind Rebellious against the forces of the Creator God! Awesome, awesome! And yet what does such a power amount to, all the forces of Army Mankind Rebellious, when pitted against the authority of the Lord Zebaoth? Nuclear Weapons? Forget! Chemical Weapons? Peanuts! Biological Warfare? Who created the germs to begin with? I can imagine heaven laughing to scorn at such a blatant display of arrogance and disrespect by Humankind. “What are those nonentities up to?” Michael the Archangel will ask Gabriel in wonder as they await the order from the Commander-in-Chief of the Forces of Heaven. Will He decide to cause the earth to open up and swallow the entire Army Humanicus, including all their military hardware—mechanical, chemical, biological and what have you? Or will He adopt a less violent approach and in a twinkling of an eye withdraw all air from the surface of the earth? Having reflected on the circumstances of the birth of Doctor Jesus, I will now proceed to consider His healing ministry proper.
